The eyes have it

Posted on 1st November 2011

Blimey, it's been ages since I last wrote a blog, apologies. Where has the time gone?

Well, for a few weeks for me, it went in a blur, literally.

A lot of the clients I work with have nothing to do with the publishing industry but have embraced the need to have their reports, websites, marketing material etc. proofread. The big challenge as a freelancer is persuading more people to see the benefit of this. I was reminded of this when life was passing in a blur, because I went to collect my prescription glasses only to put them on and see nothing. After being sent home to 'try them in a natural setting, it may just be your eyes', it clearly wasn't my eyes causing the problem so I returned to the opticians to find that the prescription had been transferred incorrectly to my copy so when I then went to a different shop to buy the glasses, they were totally wrong.

What should have said 105 said 10 and no-one had bothered to cross-check the data. Having a proofreader in every opticians would probably not be very realistic, but this does highlight the need for attention to detail and double checking data in almost all scenarios.

You'll be pleased to know my glasses got sorted and I can now see the TV more clearly (fear not, I don't need them for computer work) but the delay was somewhat frustrating. I should have left them my business card but I don't think they would have seen it...
